Biography
Steve Holt became Professor-Director and CEO of SEHA Kidney Care (SKC) Abu Dhabi, UAE in 2020, and appointed as adjunct professor at Khalifa University. SEHA kidney care provides the majority of dialysis across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. SKC also provide many other nephrology services including chronic kidney disease management and recently implemented an organ procurement office to facilitate renal and other organ transplantation. Steve moved from Australia where he was most recently Director of Nephrology at The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) and Professor of Medicine at The University of Melbourne. The RMH provides a tertiary and quaternary nephrology and dialysis services to a large part of Victoria with 24 satellite dialysis units and a large home dialysis population. He also oversaw the RMH renal transplant programme, which is one of the largest in Australia, and provides transplantation services to Victoria, Tasmania and difficult cases nationally and internationally, specialising in highly sensitised and ABO incompatible transplantation. RMH also hosts the National Paired Kidney Exchange programme Prior to being in Australia this he led renal clinical services and basic science research at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals, UK and assisted in setting up the Brighton and Sussex Medical School. During the last 20 years he has established clinical and laboratory research in both the UK, Australia and now Abu Dhabi. He has numerous publications in high impact journals. He has a strong interest in clinical information technology, electronic and expert systems and artificial intelligence. He was instrumental in designing, writing and implementing a number of clinical computer programs, algorithms and electronic innovations during all his previous posts. He was trained in London, UK mainly at The Royal Free and University College Hospitals where he also completed his PhD in mechanisms of oxidative stress in renal injury. Steve Holt has international expertise in dialysis therapies, vascular pathology and mineral biochemistry. He has been Primary and Chief Investigator on a large number of local, national and international studies and drug trials. He has been instrumental in writing national/international guidelines and been on the organising committee and speaker at numerous international/ national conferences. Steve has also supervised many trainees to higher degrees in the UK and Australia.
